YOUNTVILLE-It’s been a great season for the Napa Valley Baseball Club 17U team. On Thursday they began the California State American Legion tournament with a 9-2 win over the Chico Suns.
“It felt good, it felt good to get the dirt off after the loss,” Napa High senior Andrew Wheeler said.
“We lost to this team, and they knocked us out of the race, so it’s great to put it to them,” Drew Hatfield said of the win.
Napa scored first in this game, with a run in the first. Cole Ridling doubled, and scored on a Max Phipps single.
In the second the Suns answered with a run. Chris Gray singled, and got to second on a 2-2 wild pitch by Hatfield, Devin Henderson walked. Following the walk Jack Taylor singled home Gray.
NVBC retook the lead in the top of the third when Garrett Yates walked, and got to third on a pickoff attempt gone wrong by the Suns, and Colton Maher singled him home.
Napa took a 5-1 lead in the fourth when Hatfield reached on a bunt single, and scored when Troy Ghisletta singled, Omar Gonzalez grounded out scoring Andrew Wheeler who had singled, and Maher singled to score Ghisletta.
NVBC put another in the fifth when Phipps singled, Leachman singled, and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Hatfield. Wheeler reached on an error to score Phipps. Napa added a run in the sixth and seventh as well.
Chico scored their final run in the seventh.
Hatfield got the win for Napa. He struck out four, and walked one in 4 ⅔ innings of work.
“I threw good, I kept the ball over the plate, got a lot of groundouts, and pop flies, it was good,” Hatfield said of his outing.
Troy Cardin took the loss for Chico.
Napa moves on to play Eureka at 3pm tomorrow at Borman Field in Yountville, Chico will play at 12:30 against San Juan Capistrano who won 9-0 over Davis. The tournament is a double-elimination tournament. In the 10am game it’ll be Pamona vs Davis.
