YOUNTVILLE-It’s been a great season for the Napa Valley Baseball Club 17U team. On Thursday they began the California State American Legion tournament with a 9-2 win over the Chico Suns.

“It felt good, it felt good to get the dirt off after the loss,” Napa High senior Andrew Wheeler said.

Napa scored first in this game, with a run in the first. Cole Ridling doubled, and scored on a Max Phipps single.

In the second the Suns answered with a run. Chris Gray singled, and got to second on a 2-2 wild pitch by Hatfield, Devin Henderson walked. Following the walk Jack Taylor singled home Gray.

NVBC retook the lead in the top of the third when Garrett Yates walked, and got to third on a pickoff attempt gone wrong by the Suns, and Colton Maher singled him home.

Napa took a 5-1 lead in the fourth when Hatfield reached on a bunt single, and scored when Troy Ghisletta singled, Omar Gonzalez grounded out scoring Andrew Wheeler who had singled, and Maher singled to score Ghisletta.

NVBC put another in the fifth when Phipps singled, Leachman singled, and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Hatfield. Wheeler reached on an error to score Phipps. Napa added a run in the sixth and seventh as well.

Chico scored their final run in the seventh.

“I threw good, I kept the ball over the plate, got a lot of groundouts, and pop flies, it was good,” Hatfield said of his outing.
